Cost to Consumers

Personal injury lawyers are abusing our courts and manufacturing bogus lawsuits for their own gain, and we are all paying the price. Lawsuit abuse increases the prices we pay for goods and services, consumes valuable tax dollars that could be better spent on economic development, schools or services for needy citizens, increases health care costs, and threatens jobs and our economy. Lawsuit abuse forces small businesses to shut their doors and even impacts the education our children receive.

Cost to Consumers and Taxpayers

  • Each suit adds up.  In 2011, just one lawsuit over a poultry processing plant cost taxpayers over $1 million. (Chicken plant lawsuit cost taxpayers $1M, The Associated Press, 2011).

Cost to Our Children

  • “Among 12 state school districts, litigation costs over three fiscal years exceeded $98.7 million, or enough funding to have provided 246,762 desktop computer packages.” (The Impact of Litigation on California Schools, California Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse, 2010)

Cost to Health Care Providers and Patients

  • PricewaterhouseCoopers calculates that Health Care costs continue to rise about 5% each year-- that's fast than inflation! (The Factors Fueling Rising Health Care Costs, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, 2010)
