The 2014 governor’s race in Florida is going to have major consequences for the state. Of course, there are all the usual issues to consider – jobs, healthcare, education, etc. But did you also know that Florida’s next governor will have a chance to reshape the state Supreme Court?

A total of FOUR Florida Supreme Court justices will leave the court during the next governor’s term, as they reach the mandatory retirement age of 70. This means that the next governor will get to pick four of the state’s seven Supreme Court justices, and who they choose will have significant consequences.

Did you know that as an industry, lawyers and law firms donate more to politicians than any other group? There are lots of examples of trial lawyer political influence. Most recently, trial lawyers have given hundreds of thousands of dollars to Louisiana Supreme Court candidate Jeff Hughes.

The purpose of trial lawyer political donations is clear: they want to buy candidates and judges who will oppose reforms and allow them to continue getting rich through abuse of our legal system.

In the aftermath of Tuesday’s election, the nation may seem deeply divided between Democrats and Republicans. But while party labels have a lot of consequences, there is one issue on which Republicans and Democrats can agree: lawsuit abuse is a problem. A recent survey released by the American Tort Reform Association and Sick of Lawsuits found that members of both parties believe that there are too many frivolous lawsuits and that lawsuit abuse hurts the economy.
