Another Reminder: Stopping Lawsuit Abuse Starts with You!

When we make poor decisions, we should take personal responsibility for our actions instead of turning to lawsuits. But that’s exactly what a young Louisiana man is doing – and boy, did he make a poor decision!

In 2012, Ray Conrad II decided to drink at a bar, despite the fact that he was underage, and then drive home while intoxicated. Unfortunately, he crashed his car on the way home and injured himself.

Now, Conrad and his father are suing the bar that served Conrad alcohol, saying that they are at fault for his injuries.

Something frightful brewing

More Trial Lawyer Greed in Louisiana

Despite the efforts of reform-minded legislators, Louisiana still has a lot of work to do in improving its legal climate. For instance, the state continues to suffer from out of control “legacy lawsuits.” More recently, a massive lawsuit brought by a southeast Louisiana flood control board offers an upsetting example of trial lawyer greed.

It’s Lawsuit Abuse Awareness Week – Are You Part of the Problem or Part of the Solution?

Editor’s Note: Project Lawsuit Abuse regularly highlights lawsuit abuse news from across the country. Today, Melissa Landry, Executive Director of Louisiana Lawsuit Abuse Watch, contributed a guest post for Project Lawsuit Abuse.

This week – October 7-11 – marks Lawsuit Abuse Awareness Week, when groups across the country stop to reflect on the negative effects of lawsuit abuse.  These effects can include increased costs of consumer goods, decreased compensation for real victims and reduced access to our courts.

Slip, Fall…Get Rich?

The slip and fall lawsuit is something that all small business owners fear. While some are legitimate, many others are not. Take, for instance, the story of a woman in Illinois who claimed she fell in water on the floor of a small grocery store. Later, security footage showed that she actually dragged her foot through the water to make it look like she slipped – can you believe that?

America’s Favorite Pastime Is…Suing??

Anyone who has ever played a sport knows that injuries are part of the game. Sports present inherent dangers to all participants, from children just starting out in tee ball to professional athletes. When you sign up for an athletic endeavor, you’re accepting a certain level of risk.

Unfortunately, a recreational baseball player in Louisiana didn’t get that memo. Ed Dargan, who broke his leg while sliding into home plate, is suing the City of Kenner for not properly maintaining the home plate area.

It seems like we hear a new story about a “Trial Lawyer Behaving Badly” almost every day! This week’s newest offender is Kerry D. Brown, a Louisiana personal injury lawyer. Brown has been charged with stealing a whopping $50,000 from his clients!

Prosecutors say that Brown stole from numerous clients, including an elderly person. Brown also faced an interim suspension of his law license for allegedly mishandling $85,000 of client funds in January 2012.
