Each May, California puts aside one week to celebrate the important efforts of citizens who devote their time and effort to jury service. As California’s Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye says, “Serving on a jury is more than a civic responsibility—it is how each and every one of us provides access to justice for all.”

It has been 20 years since Stella Liebeck suffered third degree burns after she accidently spilled hot coffee in her lap and sued McDonald’s. The case became a lightning rod for legal reform. Initially she was awarded more than $2.7 million dollars by a jury in New Mexico. The trial judge reduced it to $640,000 and then the parties settled for a confidential amount.

It’s the end of the year, which means it’s time for the American Tort Reform Association’s annual list of “Judicial Hellholes,” or places where judges in civil cases systematically apply laws and court procedures in an unfair and unbalanced manner.
While some new names have appeared on the list, the nation’s number one Judicial Hellhole remains the same – it’s California!
